Getting From Queenstown to the Glaciers

Queenstown is approximately 350 kilometres from the Franz Josef/Fox Glacier region — about 4.5 hours by road via Haast Pass (SH6). The drive is one of the most scenic in New Zealand: through the Crown Range or via Cromwell and Wanaka, along the shore of Lake Wanaka, over the Haast Pass through the heart of the Southern Alps, and down into the West Coast rainforest.

Pre-booked transfers provide a vehicle and driver for the journey — either as a direct transfer (door to door, Queenstown accommodation to glacier accommodation) or as a scenic transfer with stops at Lake Wanaka, the Blue Pools (a short walk to crystal-clear glacial pools), Haast, and the Knight’s Point viewpoint on the West Coast.

Rental car is the most flexible option — the road is well-maintained (two lanes, sealed throughout), and the ability to stop at the numerous viewpoints and short walks along the route adds significantly to the journey.

Intercity bus services connect Queenstown to the glacier region with scheduled departures — the most affordable option but the least flexible (fixed departure times, no stops).

Practical Tips

The drive is the experience. The Queenstown-to-glaciers road is not dead travel time — it is one of New Zealand’s great drives. The transition from the dry, tussock-covered Central Otago landscape through the mountain pass and down into the lush, wet, green West Coast rainforest is a dramatic environmental shift that makes the drive worthwhile in its own right.

Allow a full day. The 4.5-hour drive time does not include stops — and you will want to stop. The Blue Pools walk (30 minutes return), the Haast Pass lookouts, and the roadside waterfalls add 1–2 hours to the journey.

The road is mountain driving. The Haast Pass reaches approximately 563 metres and includes winding mountain roads. In winter (June–August), the pass can have ice and snow — check conditions and carry chains if driving yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to drive from Queenstown to Franz Josef?

Is the Queenstown-to-glacier drive safe?

Yes — the road is sealed and well-maintained. It is two-lane mountain driving with some winding sections through the Haast Pass. Drive to the conditions, be cautious on the mountain sections, and check weather conditions in winter.

Can I fly from Queenstown to the glaciers?
