Campervan Bases for New Zealand’s Glaciers: Where to Stay Close to the Ice

Quick summary: Five small towns make the best campervan bases for New Zealand’s glaciers. On the West Coast, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are the two glacier townships, around 25 km apart, each with holiday parks, flight bases and glacier valley walks. On the eastern side of the Alps, Aoraki/Mount Cook Village has a DOC campground beneath the peaks, and Twizel offers full services an hour away. Haast links the two sides. Each guide covers where to park the campervan or motorhome and what to do there.

Should you stay at Franz Josef or Fox Glacier?

Both work well, and they’re only half an hour apart. Franz Josef is larger, with more tours, cafés and holiday parks, while Fox is quieter and closer to Lake Matheson’s famous reflections. Many travellers stay a night in each, or base themselves in one and visit the other.

How many nights does an RV need at a glacier base?

At least two, and three if a flight or heli-hike is a priority. That gives you a spare morning if the weather closes in, which happens often on the West Coast. At Mount Cook, two nights allow one full day for the Hooker Valley and the Tasman Glacier.
